Curbs and gutters do two jobs: they define the edge of the roadway and channel stormwater into catch basins. Without them, rainwater sheets across pavement, floods low-lying areas, and erodes soil along roadsides. The curb acts as a barrier that keeps vehicles on the road and redirects water into the gutter pan, which is the sloped section between the curb face and the road surface. That pan funnels runoff toward storm drains at a controlled rate.

Most municipalities have strict specs for curb and gutter profiles—the height, width, and radius have to match their standards so snowplows don't damage them and drainage flows correctly. We work from those engineering drawings, forming and pouring to exact dimensions. If you're installing new curb and gutter, we also coordinate the tie-ins to existing storm sewer inlets and adjust grades so water actually flows toward the drains instead of ponding in the gutter.

Municipal Profile Compliance

Every city or county has a standard curb profile—usually either a vertical curb or a rolled curb (also called mountable curb). Vertical curbs are 6 to 8 inches tall with a sharp face, used where you don't want vehicles crossing. Rolled curbs have a sloped face that vehicles can drive over, common in residential areas. We form to the exact profile required by your jurisdiction.

Using the wrong profile or pouring to incorrect dimensions will fail inspection and require removal. We keep updated spec sheets for local municipalities to avoid that.

Gutter Pan Slope and Flow

The gutter pan has to slope toward the storm drain. If it's flat or slopes the wrong direction, water sits in the gutter and creates ice in winter or mosquito breeding grounds in summer. We use a laser level to check the grade as we form, ensuring a minimum 0.5% slope in the direction of flow.

In long runs between catch basins, we may need to increase the slope or widen the gutter to handle the volume of water without overtopping.

Tie-Ins to Existing Infrastructure

When you're replacing a section of curb and gutter, the new concrete has to match the elevation and alignment of the existing sections on both ends. If there's a mismatch, you get a bump or drop that damages vehicles and looks sloppy. We use string lines and grade stakes to ensure continuity across the transition.

We also tie into storm sewer inlets without blocking them. The gutter has to slope down to the inlet and the curb has to frame it correctly so the grate sits flush with the road surface.

Erosion Prevention at Roadway Edge

Without a curb, stormwater runoff erodes the road shoulder and undermines the pavement edge. Over time, this creates potholes and edge failures that are expensive to fix. Curbs prevent this by containing the runoff and directing it to controlled drainage points instead of letting it sheet off the edge.

This is especially critical on sloped roads where water velocity is high. A properly poured curb stops that erosion before it starts.

Forming for Clean Lines

Curbs are visible infrastructure. If they're wavy, crooked, or have blowouts where the forms shifted, it reflects poorly on the contractor and the property. We use rigid metal or fiberglass forms that hold their shape under the pressure of wet concrete. Forms are staked every 3 to 4 feet and braced to prevent shifting during the pour.

We also tool the edges and radii to match municipal standards, creating a clean, professional appearance.

Reinforcement for Impact Resistance

Curbs get hit by snowplows, cars, and delivery trucks. Without reinforcement, they crack and break apart. We install rebar horizontally through the curb section—typically two bars for a 6-inch curb—and tie them to the gutter pan reinforcement to create a unified structure.

This internal steel holds the curb together even if it gets impacted, preventing complete failure.
