Why the Cold Joint Detail Matters

A patio addition creates a cold joint — the seam where new concrete meets fully cured concrete. That joint is the single most important detail on the job. Done right, it disappears visually and holds tight for decades. Done wrong, it opens up within a season and telegraphs across the whole patio.

What a proper cold joint tie-in looks like:

• The existing slab edge is cleaned back to sound concrete, saw-cut straight if the edge is broken up
• Steel dowel bars are drilled into the existing slab edge on 12-to-18-inch centers, epoxied in place, and extend into the new pour
• The dowels are typically sleeved on the new side so the two slabs can expand and contract independently without shearing the joint
• The new base is compacted to match — or exceed — the compaction of the original base under the existing slab
• The new pour is placed at the exact same finish elevation as the old slab, with the finisher working the seam by hand to blend the surface texture
• A control joint or expansion joint gets tooled or sawed at the cold joint line so any future movement happens along a planned seam
