Concrete Anchor Installation Guide
Drill hole. Clean dust. Insert anchor. Tighten nut. Wedge anchors are permanent; Tapcons are removable.
Concrete Anchor Installation: Complete Guide
Installing anchors in concrete seems simple, but get any step wrong and the anchor will fail. This guide covers the exact process for installing both Tapcons (removable) and wedge anchors (permanent) correctly.
Tapcon Anchors (Removable)
Tapcons are threaded screws that create their own threads in concrete. They're removable and good for light to medium loads.
Installation Process
- Drill hole: Use masonry bit, diameter specified on Tapcon package (typically 3/16 inch for #10 Tapcons)
- Clean dust: Use compressed air, vacuum, or brush to remove ALL dust
- Insert anchor: Screw Tapcon into hole with impact driver or hammer drill
- Tighten: Stop when snug—don't over-tighten
Key Points
- Hole must be exact size (too large = weak hold)
- Must clean hole completely (dust prevents proper installation)
- Can be removed if needed
- Good for light to medium loads
Wedge Anchors (Permanent)
Wedge anchors expand inside concrete to create a very strong, permanent hold.
Installation Process
- Drill hole: Exact diameter and depth specified on anchor package
- Clean dust: Remove ALL dust (critical step)
- Insert anchor: Place anchor to bottom of hole
- Tighten nut: Use wrench to tighten, which expands the wedge
- Verify: Anchor should be secure and not move
Key Points
- Permanent installation (not removable)
- Very high holding power
- Requires precise hole size and depth
- Best for heavy loads
The Bottom Line
Both anchor types require: correct hole size, thorough cleaning, and proper installation. Tapcons are removable and good for lighter loads. Wedge anchors are permanent and best for heavy loads. Choose based on your load requirements and whether you need removability.
